Eyelift Surgery In Richmond, Virginia
Dr. Alan Burke: Facial Plastics & Reconstructive Surgery in Richmond, VA is pleased to offer upper and lower blepharoplasty. This procedure removes excess skin on the eyelids. If you are suffering from sagging eyelids or are looking to improve the overall appearance of your eyes, then this procedure might be the right option for you.
What Is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelift, is surgery used to improve the appearance of the skin around the eyes. The procedure can be performed on either the upper or lower eyelids, or both if needed. While most patients who seek this procedure want to address aging concerns, it can also be performed to address medical concerns.
What’s The Difference Between Upper And Lower Blepharoplasty?
While both procedures are similar, there are some differences between the two. Upper blepharoplasty can be performed for either cosmetic or medical reasons:
Upper cosmetic procedure:
Improves the appearance of the eyelid from issues such as aging, including baggy or saggy skin. The procedure tightens the skin, resulting in a more youthful appearance. It can even improve the appearance of hooded eyes.
Upper medical procedure:
Can be used to improve vision for patients who have loose or sagging skin that blocks the eye.
Lower blepharoplasty can also be performed for both cosmetic and medical reasons, but is more often performed on patients who have cosmetic concerns. Concerns include:
Lower cosmetic procedure:
Addresses issues such as under-eye bags, puffiness and sagging lower eyelids.
Medical lower blepharoplasty:
Certain medical conditions can make lower blepharoplasty medically necessary, such as chronic dry eyes, a stroke or a neuromuscular disorder called myasthenia gravis.
What To Expect During Surgery?
After administering anesthesia, Dr. Burke will make an incision to the crease on either the upper eyelid or below the lash line on the lower lid. Once the excess skin has been removed, the skin is tightened and then secured back in place with sutures or skin glue. Expect to plan on having someone drive you both to and from your surgery.
Blepharoplasty Recovery
After your surgery, you may experience side effects such as:
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Dry eyes
- Redness
- Discomfort
- Light sensitivity
- Blurred vision
Expect your recovery to take one to two weeks, but some swelling and bruising may remain for up to three weeks. The recovery time might take up to four weeks if you had the upper and lower procedures done simultaneously.
