Cosmetic injectables are becoming increasingly popular in the beauty industry. These non-surgical treatments can help to enhance and rejuvenate the appearance of the face by restoring lost volume and smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles. In this blog, we’ll explore what cosmetic injectables are, how they work and what injectables we offer at Dr. Alan Burke: Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery!
What Are Cosmetic Injectables?
Cosmetic injectables are substances that are injected into the skin to improve its appearance. There are two main types of injectables: neurotoxins and dermal fillers. Neurotoxins work by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause wrinkles, while dermal fillers plump up the skin to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and add volume.
What To Expect From Treatment?
Cosmetic injectables are typically administered in a medical spa or doctor’s office. The procedure is non-surgical and requires minimal downtime, so you can usually return to your normal activities immediately after treatment. The injections themselves usually take only a few minutes, and you may experience some mild discomfort, although this can be managed with ice or numbing cream.
The results of cosmetic injectables are usually visible immediately after treatment, although it may take a few days for any swelling or bruising to subside. The effects of neurotoxins usually last around 3-6 months, while the effects of dermal fillers can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years, depending on the type of filler used.
Our Services
At Dr. Burke: Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery four types of injectable treatment options:
Botox
Botox®, also known as Botulinum toxin, lessens the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on the face. It works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles, making wrinkles less noticeable. Used for moderate to severe wrinkles and lines, one of the most common places where patients receive injections is between the eyebrows. Though the results are temporary, the effects typically last for several months. Botox® is a popular treatment due to its many benefits, including:
- Fast-acting
- Minimal pain
- Quick and safe procedure
- Natural-looking results
- FDA approved
- No specific aftercare.
Fillers
Fillers are gel-like substances that are injected into the skin to add volume and fullness to the face and help make moderate to severe wrinkles less noticeable. Fillers are safe, subtle, minimally invasive and virtually painless. Though temporary, results should last for several months. Dr. Burke and his team use the following fillers:
- RESTYLANE® – Focuses on nasolabial folds (deep lines around the mouth) and the lips
- JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC – Treats the nasolabial folds and wrinkles around the nose and mouth
- JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC – Adds lift and contour to the cheeks
Kybella
A non-invasive fat reduction procedure, Kybella is typically performed in-office under local anesthesia and helps improve the appearance of what is commonly known as “a double chin” by targeting the fat under the chin. In addition to eliminating fat, it also lifts and tightens the skin as healing occurs. Made from a molecule called deoxycholic acid, Kybella® is naturally occurring. Some benefits include:
- FDA approved
- Non-surgical alternative to liposuction
- Effective after just one treatment—no follow-up injections
Plasma-Rich Protein (PRP)
Also known as the platelet-rich plasma facelift, this treatment uses plasma from the patient’s own blood. The treatment involves taking blood from the patient’s arm, which is treated to activate nutrient-rich plasma. The injections stimulate skin cells, causing them to rejuvenate and achieve facelift-like results. Because it is their own blood that is used, patients experience immediate results, minimal side effects and no risk of allergic reactions.
PRP is not a permanent solution to facial sagging or improving other signs of aging. Results usually last around a year and patients will need to repeat treatment to maintain results.
Cosmetic injectables can be a great way to rejuvenate your appearance and achieve a more youthful look without surgery. If you’re interested in learning more about cosmetic injectables, talk to Dr. Burke or our aesthetic registered nurse to find out if these treatments are right for you.
