Neurotoxins and Fillers

Cosmetic injectables are a popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment that can be used to improve the appearance of the face and reduce signs of aging. At Dr. Alan Burke: Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery in Henrico, VA, our licensed aesthetic nurses are highly experienced at performing a variety of injectables, and aim to make the experience as relaxed and pain-free as possible.
Neurotoxin Injectables
Botox® by Allergan and Jeuveau® by Evolus
Neurotoxins are injectables used to lessen the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on the face. They work by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles or irregularities, making static fine lines less noticeable. One of the most common places where patients receive injections is between the eyebrows (the 11’s or frown lines), the forehead and around the eyes (crow’s feet). Though the results are temporary, the effects typically last for 3-5 months.
What To Expect During Neurotoxin Treatment?
Before getting started, our highly experienced aesthetic providers will complete a thorough consultation and assessment. They will develop a plan of care and answer any questions you may have. Your provider may mark the treatment areas or take photos for your chart. Neurotoxin injectables come in a freeze-dried or powder-like form that needs to be reconstituted with saline in order to draw up the prescribed dosage.
The area will be cleaned and prepped before injecting. The procedure is quick and safe with minimal discomfort.
After Your Neurotoxin Treament
Bruising is common, and often unavoidable, post-treatment. Headaches are also a possible side effect for some patients after receiving the injectables, which may be caused by the needle trauma itself. For the remainder of the day, we recommend that you do not lay down, bend over (head below your heart), heavily exercise or manipulate the treatment area in any way. This is a crucial time and could lead to complications if the neurotoxin gets pushed somewhere it was not intended to be.
For the next 2 weeks, continue to avoid heavy manipulation of the treatment area. This includes, for example, massages and wearing tight hats or goggles. The neurotoxin will take a full 2 weeks to completely settle in. It is normal to experience irregularities during this time as the medications kick in.
We highly recommend booking a 2-3 week follow-up appointment to make any dose adjustments or tweaks, which is always complimentary. This helps your provider to get to know your facial muscles and perfect your injection pattern.
Dermal Filler Injectables
Juvederm® by Allergan and RHA® by Revanesse
As we age, our faces lose their supporting structures and we experience shifts in the shape, texture and appearance of our skin. This is largely due to the loss of collagen, muscle, bone and fat over time. Thus, wrinkles, folds, lines and hollows begin to form in the skin.
Dermal fillers are injectables made with gel-like substances that are injected into various planes of the face to restore that youthful volume and fullness, as well as make moderate to severe wrinkles less noticeable. Going to a trusted and experienced provider is very important to achieve safe and natural results. Though temporary, fillers can last anywhere from 6-12 months and to up to 2 years. This is dependent on the type of filler (how soft or stiff the formula is) and the anatomical area in which it is placed (how much the area moves).

What To Expect During Dermal Fillers Treatment?
Before getting started, our highly experienced aesthetic providers will complete a thorough consultation and assessment. They will develop a plan of care and answer any questions you may have. Your provider may mark the treatment areas or take photos for your chart. We will first apply numbing cream to the treatment area 30-45 minutes prior to treatment. The area will then be cleaned and prepped before injecting. The procedure is quick and safe, with minimal discomfort.
After Your Dermal Fillers Treatment
Bruising, tenderness and swelling are always expected after your injectables treatment. This is mostly due to inflammation from the needle trauma itself. Swelling immediately after treatment can be alarming for patients who perceive they have been overdone. It is important to be educated by your provider that this is just swelling and will go down. For final results, fillers take a full 2 weeks to completely settle in and for any swelling to subside. It is normal to experience irregularities during this time. We highly recommend booking a 2-3 week follow-up appointment to make any adjustments.
